Biography

Born & raised in Vaudreuil, Dave's coming home after years abroad to fight for the community that shaped him. With a lifetime of public service, environmental activism, and deep local roots, he’s ready to stand up for Vaudreuil when it needs a strong voice and leader the most.

Dave’s story echoes the journey of so many in Vaudreuil. His roots run deep in this community, stretching back to his grandparents—Dutch immigrants who arrived in Quebec after World War II, determined to give back to the country that had helped liberate their homeland. They came with a dream, not just for themselves but for future generations, working tirelessly to build a better, stronger, and more prosperous community. That same spirit of service and resilience shaped Dave’s own path.

Raised by a single mother with the unwavering support of his grandparents, Dave grew up in various areas of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region, learning the values of hard work, civic duty, and commitment to the greater good. Whether it was watching his grandfather's unwavering dedication to the community or listening to his mother advocate for fairness and justice, David learned early on that community is something you nurture, protect, and fight for.

That belief led him into a lifetime of public service and activism. In 2000, Dave left Vaudreuil for the U.S. and began a career in public safety—a field where every second counts, and every decision can mean the difference between life and death. As a veteran emergency services dispatcher, he has spent nearly two decades being the voice that people hear in their most desperate moments, bringing calm in the face of crisis. This work instilled in him an unshakable resolve: when problems arise, you don’t sit back and hope for change—you take action.

While living abroad, Dave didn’t just watch as communities struggled with environmental crises—he stepped up. He became deeply involved in local environmental efforts, organizing clean-up drives, and working hand-in-hand with neighbors to fight for a greener, healthier future. His passion and leadership did not go unnoticed. He was elected by his community as a local progressive Democrat, working with legislators at the municipal, state, and federal levels to drive forward sustainable policies that put people and the planet first. His ability to navigate the political landscape and bring people together to enact real change became his signature.

Dave’s commitment to environmental advocacy extends beyond public policy—it’s a value he has instilled within his own family. Recognizing the importance of environmental education, he made the deliberate choice to enroll his children in an “environmental” charter school, an institution within the public school system that educates students to high academic standards using innovative curricula that fosters knowledge, love of, and respect for the environment and preserve it for future generations. For Dave, shaping the next generation’s understanding of environmental stewardship is not just a belief—it’s a responsibility, essential for lasting change.

Reason for running

Dave's committed to defending Vaudreuil's constitutional, transportation, & environmental rights—rights no other candidate seems willing to defend. He'll keep fighting to extend the REM, oppose dangerous pipelines, & push for electoral reform to better represent all Canadians.

Fighting for Vaudreuil’s Future

But “home" has always been calling Dave. Driven by a desire to serve the community that raised him, Dave’s quest to finally return to Vaudreuil continues, bringing with him years of experience in advocacy, policy, and grassroots organizing. For instance,

  1. Expanding Sustainable Mass Transit – Dave has since thrown himself into the fight to extend the REM to Vaudreuil, so as to finally tackle a problem dogging the region for decades—that of transportation grid problems, and ensure access to sustainable modern mass transit;
  2. Defending Minority Rights – He has stood as a strong & vocal defender of the rights of minorities across Canada, advocating for inclusivity and equity; and
  3. Fixing Our Broken Electoral System – Dave has remained steadfast in his commitment to electoral reform, working to replace the outdated ‘First Past The Post’- a system that can reward a party with less than a third of the vote with absolute power, and replace it with one that truly represents the voices of ALL Canadians.

Dave’s unique background—combining nearly 20 years in emergency services with a storied career in environmental and political activism—equips him with the tools necessary to tackle two of the greatest challenges of our time: improving public safety and combating the climate crisis. This experience is part of the reason he has been selected to be the Green Party’s critic on Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. Further, his leadership as a progressive Democrat over the last 15 years has further strengthened his ability to mobilize people, fight for progressive policies, and puts him in a unique position in attempting to tackle the rising tide of authoritarianism that threatens democratic institutions both at home and abroad.

Protecting Our Communities: Stopping Yet Another Dangerous Pipeline Through Our Region

And now with Donald Trump threatening tariffs on Canada, something dangerous is happening locally. The federal and provincial governments are backtracking & reconsidering reviving a once-rejected pipeline project that would push diluted bitumen through our region . Why? To give Alberta tar sands oil a direct path to east coast ports and European markets.

And here’s the truth: the federal government is not ready for a pipeline disaster of this scale. Not even close. Their safety measures are weak and their emergency plans are inadequate. And the risks? They fall on communities like ours, in Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Instead of doubling down on fossil fuels, we should be investing in clean energy solutions that create jobs while protecting our environment.

A Candidate Who Will Fight for You

Now, more than ever, we need leaders who won’t back down. Leaders with the experience to understand the stakes. The skills to fight back. The passion to protect our future. That’s Dave—and he’s ready to stand up for our region when it matters most.

Dave is ready to take that fight to Parliament. He’s not running to be another voice lost in the political noise—he is running to deliver real, tangible results for the people of Vaudreuil. He is running to build a future where our communities are safer, our environment is protected, and our democracy is stronger.

If you believe in bold, principled leadership—if you want someone who will fight relentlessly for a better future and not stay quiet when our community most needs someone to stand up for them—in Vaudreuil Dave Hamelin-Schuilenburg is your candidate. We invite you to join his campaign, volunteer, and / or make a contribution today.

Together, we can turn vision into action and build the Canada we deserve.
